How did I not ever blog this hilarious boy band song? It's meta, it's comedy, it's got everything I like.

Gift comedy
I got my wife a present. It's kind of large and bulky. I wrapped it in a big box. She was moving it around the floor last night, as we decorated the tree. She complained about how much work it was to move the big boat around the room.
The present is not a boat. But I thought it would be funny to pretend that she had just guessed what the present was. So I put a look of fear on my face and said, "What? Boat? How did you..." She then took the bait, and as I protested that maybe I was acting and it wasn't actually a boat, she would have none of it. She was giggling at how hilarious it was that I couldn't keep a secret. And although she never reads this (no one does now, probably, after my months of silence), I'm not going to tell you what it is either. Except it's not a boat.
She is going to be surprised on Christmas.

Xbox Kinect Lives
I'm a fan of Lore Sjoberg, and not just because of the Nordic j in his name.
I particularly enjoyed his recent essay about an Xbox Kinect controller that becomes self-aware.

XKCD Color Survey
If you're unfamiliar with XKCD, it's one of the best line-art nerdy webcomics out there.
Recently the author of that comic posted a survey of color names, putting up squares of different colors and asking people to name them. He also asked people about their gender, because colorblindness is a sex-related genetic trait.
If you read through the survey results, I think you'll find it interesting and amusing. Read all the way to the end, or at least skip to the end and read all the comments people left along the way. I was laughing for minutes.

Poker Face
Hooray for the British TV producer who had the brilliant idea to have Christopher Walken perform Lady Gaga's "Poker Face".

Turn teaching up to 11
I read an article at the BBC about some twit who pointed out that it's useful to have a bad teacher at some point because it builds character. While true, not something that the chairman of the Office for Standards in Education (something British) should say out loud.
But far more important than the quality of children's education is what happens when you adjust the volume on the accompanying video. The sound range on this video is from 0 to 11. Yes, 11.
You can turn it up to 11. I suspect this is a basic feature, and any video on the BBC website can be turned up to 11. On half a dozen different clips, I found this to be the case.

Unfortunate Web Addresses
Man, I would not want to be named Michael Sporn. Especially if I ever started a business named after me, and had to create a website for it.

Late Night battles
Why do I care more about late night TV show hosting choices than others? Is it because I'm a comedy aficionado? Or is there something intrinsically fascinating about how NBC spurned David Letterman and is now treating Conan O'Brien badly?
I haven't watched these shows since college. I need my sleep too badly now. But it seems like the network regularly passes over the charming and funny person for the bland, boring and safe. Why do they keep coming back to Jay Leno?
I grudgingly must admit that Jay Leno gets higher ratings. America prefers Leno's bland crap, apparently. Except his new show is a bomb. If Jay Leno gets the Tonight Show back, it'll be interesting to see if he gets its ratings back, too. Or if we've finally woken up to how much he sucks.
Of course, in this economic time of massive unemployment, Simon Dumenco of Advertising Age, has a point that Conan has “suddenly become an unlikely (Harvard-educated, multimillionaire) Everyman: the freckled face of American job insecurity, a well-meaning hard worker who spent years paying his dues but has now been declared redundant by the halfwit overlords driving his company into the ground.”
Yet is anyone surprised by NBC's behavior, given how it treated David Letterman? I guess maybe we're not surprised, but we're still mad.

There are many products on Amazon.com where the reviews are hilarious.
It does seem unlikely that these people bought these products. But their writing is awesome.

Coincidence? I think not.
Briefly: California Governor Schwarzenegger (shudder) recently vetoed a bill.
Unprofessionally, it contained an obscene acrostic. They claim the
lewd imperative suggestion is merely a bizzare coincidence. I think it's un-
likely that a swear would appear in that form without intention.
Someone did that. If it was a single four letter word, I would buy that it was a
harmless coincidence. But to have "fuck you" be the first letter of each line?
I think a person put it there deliberately. It's not easy for that to happen.
That's hard to do, even intentionally.

McClatchy vs. Daily Show
Here's the thing: The Daily Show sent a "reporter" to Iran to cover the elections. McClatchy Corp, owner of 32 daily newspapers, sent no one.
I can see that they couldn't afford to, and it's much easier to reprint whatever the New York Times produces. But this is exactly the sort of hole in reporting that I hope we figure out how to fill. Maybe the Huffington Post will eventually have a foreign correspondent doing reporting like this. But the Daily Show? Really?
My brain hurts.
